Flood in London, 1928

Cover of The Illustrated London News, 14th January 1928, with a photograph of the house in Grosvenor Road, Pimlico, in central London, where four sisters were drowned when the river Thames broke its banks and flooded in the early hours of 7th January 1928. Florence, Lilian, Rose and Doris Harding, aged respectively 18, 16, 6 and two-and-a-half, were all together in a basement room at No. 8 Grosvenor Road. Their father had moved them down from an attic bedroom on account of the cold. The force of the water made it impossible to open the door. Photo shows the subsequent pumping operation and water flowing out of the basement on to the roadway
