German Soldier with a captured American vehicle
German infantryman inspecting a captured American heavy machine-gun vehicle, during the early stages of the Battle of the Bulge, December 1944. This American weapon could be used in both anti-aircraft and infantry support roles, although the three small swastikas painted on it suggest three destroyed Nazi planes. The Battle of the Bulge was the last major Nazi offensive on the Western front during the Second World War and, though initially successful, resulted in major German losses. This photograph was taken by a German film unit during the German offensive. The film was then captured during the Allied counter-offensive
