German troops being transported in short luggage vans from which boards had been broken away in order to allow of ventilation and an outlook. The lads, who looked very young, steamed out of the waggons and down tthe platform to the temporary miliary kitchen, returning presently with their rations, an allowance of stew served in little saucepans, travellers showed chocolates and tabacco upon them
