Gladstone Speaking at Liverpool - Turkish Crisis 1896
Gladstone leading the last campaign against massacres in Armenia, which split the Liberal leaders and irritated Rosebery into resignation. Deadlock in the position of Turkish affairs in the international politics still stood. The special council met at Constantinople on 19th September and decided upon certain measures tending to a reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian subjects of the Sultan but in spite of Abdul Hamid's protestations of a desire to restore order and regain public confidence
