Hamilcar glider in Normandy 1944

The Hamilcar glider, a British carrier of airborne tanks, provides a shock for the enemy in Normandy. A Hamilcar, a huge motorless glider that had to be towed by a bomber, swoops on a battlefield in the invasion area, near Ouistreham in France, disgorging a tank which sweeps into action in support of airborne troops. The incident illustrated is one of many, says the Illustrated London News, in which Hamilcars have turned the scales in favour of Allied troops inland from the Normandy beaches after the D-Day invasion, World War Two
