Hamstead Colliery Fire 1908
A fire broke out at the foot of the main shaft at Hamstead Colliery, near Birmingham, thought to be caused by a lighted candle. Thirty-one miners were in the pit at the time, six escaped before poisonous fumes built up. Photograph showing wives of the etombed miners waiting for news of their loved ones.
