Hamstead Colliery Fire 1908

A fire broke out at the foot of the main shaft at Hamstead Colliery, near Birmingham, thought to be caused by a lighted candle. Thirty-one miners were in the pit at the time, six escaped before poisonous fumes built up. Photograph showing crowds at the mouth of the burning pit, waiting for news about the miners trapped below, sadly twenty-six were killed including one rescuer
