Hansom's Safety Cab as first design 1834
Hansom Safety Cab designed and patented by Joseph Hansom on the 23rd December 1834. Diver seated on the roof of the cab and the patent suggesting that the cab might be entered through the wheel, does not sound an easy feat; but it was in fact a simple and most ingenious device! For attached to each side of the cab were four very small wheels round which revolved an enormous hoop, thus leaving a perfectly clear passage to enter the cab through the side door
