Harry Lauder and his son John, June 1915

Scottish entertainer and music hall comedian, Harry Lauder pictured with his only son, John, in the uniform of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (8th Argyllshire Battalion) in 1915. Harry was an indefatigable recruiter during WW1 and travelled Scotland and northern towns with a pipe band to stimulate recruitment. Cambridge-educated John rejoined his territorial regiment at the outbreak of war. He is pictured in The Sketch with his father along with a report, which does not elaborate, that he has been wounded. John Lauder was killed at Pozieres on the 28 December 1916
