Our sinkable ships: how far they are protected at the present time. The height of the double bottom in a great liner: 5 ft 3 in. An engineer's assistant of average height can walk through the openings if he slightly stoops. The method of fixing the bottom plates is shown, also the intercostal girders which extend completely fore and aft and immensely strengthen the ship. The double bottom is utilised for carrying water ballast
