ILN cover - Chinese boys A-Shing and A-Yow

Front cover of The Illustrated London News for 8th November 1845 featuring an engraving of two Chinese boys, A-Shing and A-Yow who could seen at the Chinese Exhibition. The boys were brought to the UK by a ship's captain who died on the voyage home. They arrived in Liverpool and were engaged by a Mr Langdon who suggested they appear in the exhibition. The ILN comment that they are well educated in Cantonese and "converse in English tolerably well."
