ILN cover - Night of the Long Knives, Hitler, Goring & Rohm

Front cover of The Illustrated London News reporting on the execution of Ernst Rohm, former ally of Hitler and Chief Staff of the Sturmlateilung (SA) or Brownshirts during the Night of the Long Knives. Large photograph shows Rohm (centre) with Hitler and Goring (who urged Hitler to have Rohm executed). The smaller photographs show two more officers, Chief Group-Leader Heines, and Group Leader Karl Ernst, who were arrested and executed at a hotel in Bad Wiessee. The ILN states that Heines was found in shameful circumstances'. He was discovered in bed with an unidentified eighteen year-old - both were shot. Rohm's own homosexuality was emphasised as part justification for his death, claiming the party had been purged of moral turpitude, although the charges brought upon him of planning a second revolution were manufactured
