Janet Hogarth at Encyclopedia Britannica dinner 1910

Janet Hogarth speaking at an Encyclopedia Britannica dinner held to celebrate the contribution of women to the recent completion of the eleventh edition. Janet Hogarth was head of the female staff and made her speech, detaling the history of female involvement in the Encyclopedia Britannica, in response to a toast to "the work of women". The title of the image "the female of man: see homo" is a reference to the definition of "woman" in the first edition of the Encyclopedia
