Jean Batten as an ambulance driver

Jean Batten (1909 - 1982), female pioneering aviator from New Zealand who became the first woman to fly across the South Atlantic, in 1935. Photographed working as an ambulance driver during World War Two. Batten drove one of six ambulances commanded by French officers, behind French lines. The ambulances were presented to the Anglo-French Red Cross by the Durham Miners Association
