Joseph Caillaux giving evidence at the trial of his wife. Caillaux was French Prime Minister from June 1911 to January 1912. In 1913 he was accused of being a pacifist when he opposed an extension to conscription. A press campaign against Caillaux followed with the editor of Le Figaro, Gaston Calmette threatening to publish love letters between Caillaux and his former mistress, now his second wife. This resulted in Madame Caillaux killing Calmette but at her trail she was acquitted of murder
