Josephine Bradley and George Wellesley

Josephine Bradley (1893 - 1985), professional ballroom dancer and dance teacher with her dance partner and husband Douglas Wellesley-Smith, who she married in 1927. Wellesley-Smith had won the MC and been twice wounded during WWI and took up dancing during his convalescence. Their marriage only lasted four years when Douglas died aged 35. Josephine was one of the first dance professionals to be part of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, which sought to standardise steps for popular ballroom dances such as the tango and foxtrot. She was known as The First Lady of the Ballroom
