 : King Alfonso XIII

King Alfonso XIII

King Alfonso XIII (1886 - 1941) of Spain to mark the occasion of his marriage to Princess Ena of Battenberg in May 1906. Alfonso's father, King Alfonso XII, had died before he was born and so Alfonso was born king. Frail and sickly as a child, he nevertheless grew to be a charismatic and energetic young man despite being an autocratic and increasingly unpopular monarch. He toured Europe in 1905 in search of a royal bride and eventually chose Princess Ena of Battenberg, the only daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg and grandaughter of Queen Victoria. The couple married at the Church of San Geronimo in Madrid on May 31st 1906. Following the ceremony, they narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. Their marriage was not a success. Ena passed haemophilia on to two of their sons, and the couple eventually separated in 1931 when they were exiled after the proclamation of the Second Spanish republic. King Alfonso XIII died in exile in Rome, Italy and is the grandfather of the current King Juan Carlos of Spain
