King Alfonso XIII, (1886 - 1941) of Spain. Alfonso was born king in 1886 following the death of his father, Alfonson XII, a few months earlier. In 1906 he married Princess Ena of Battenberg, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, with the couple narrowly escaping death by an assassin's bomb on their wedding day. Their relationshiop was marred with tragedy as their eldest son suffered from haemophilia. Only their third son, Don Juan, the present Juan Carlos father was a healthy prospect to succeed the throne. Alfonso was unpopular during his reign, leaving Spain in 1931 in exile after the people of Spain voted unanimously for a republic
