King Edward's Visit to Newmarket Workhouse 1904
Johnny Watts received a hand written testimonial on his merits from King Edward VII, when visited various wards at Newmarket Union Workhouse. Meeting the young orphan, who had consumption. His Majesty asked him if he could play the mandolin that was near him, confused the master said he thought the boy would try to play God Save the King, the King was delighted and said he "played very well."
