King George V examining memorials on the battlefield
King George V visited the front for six days, almost every part of the British lines on the Western front, chatting to the soldiers. The Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) came across many mounds surmounted by rough wooden crosses and time and time again he stopped to read an inscription
