The Loibl Pass Incident
Brigadier Churchill, Commander of the British Zone in Austria and his party, meeting the Yugoslav delegation at the frontier post, where the Yugoslavs handed over Inge Burke, widow of Lieutenant John Edmund Burke, and 2nd Lieutenant Philip Marler. Burke was shot and killed after he, his wife and friend had passed over the Yugoslav border. The shooting caused a diplomatic incident but both an agreed statement confirmed that Burke was shot when struggling with a Yugoslav sentry a short distance inside Yugoslavia, where the party had penetrated in order to view the scenery
