Londoners in a heatwave, 1921

Solar topees and white ducks in a London crowd - effects of the heat wave on costume. Londoners adapting themselves to tropical conditions - a typical crowd at Charing Cross showing men and women trying to keep cool. Various types of clothing can be seen from an American man in shirt sleeves and trousers (gasp), light certonne dresses, a man in a car wearing a solar topee (more typically seen in tropical climates) and a variety of hats including straw boaters, Panama, Homburg and even one for a horse
