Madame Alphonsine, the Spiral Ascensionist 1897
Show given by Alphonsine, the Premier Spiral Ascensionist, with a pole 100ft high, firmly fixed, having at its apex a small circular platform, or rest, 2ft or 3ft in diameter. This is the ultimate goal of the ascensionst. The spiral pathway, next to be erected, around the pole and stayed from it by means of light steel girders. Madame Alphonsine would make her journey on the ball up the spiral way by a series of more or less graceful prances and jerks with her slippered feet, stopping now and again for applause from the audience
