Major-General Sir John Steevens by Percival Anderson
Major-General Sir John Steevens, KCB, KCMG (1855-1925), British Army Director of Equipment and Ordnance Stores during the First World War. He war service dated back to the Zulu War of 1879 and the Egyptian Campaign of 1882. After just thirteen year's service he reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel and eleven years later became Principal Ordnance Officer at Woolwich, an appointment he held throughout the Boer War (1899-1902). He held th appointment of Inspector-General of Ordnance Services, and subsequently Director of Artillery at the War Office from 1893-1898
