The Mystery of Marquis Townshend

In 1906, the 6th Marquess Townshend (John Townshend, 1866-1921) was at the centre of significant scandal involving his recent marriage to Gwladys Sutherst, with newspapers reporting on legal battles over finances, accusations of his supposed "unsound mind" (managed by lunacy commissioners), and claims he jilted a rich American heiress, all while his wife was seen as keeping him from the public eye, highlighting a tumultuous period for the family This photograph shows the Marquis and Marchioness driving out on a Sunday
