New Year's Eve in Scotland - The First Foot
A tradition of New Year's Eve, particularly in Scotland and in Northern England; welcoming the first foot into the house. In some regions, the person coming over the threshold would be male, tall and dark and be carrying a lump of coal to symbolise the hope that the family would enjoy prosperity and good fortune over the coming year
