Norman Hartnell - The Varsity Spirit in Dressmaking

Page from The Bystander reporting on the well-known Mayfair dressmaker Norman Hartnell, who, having attended Cambridge University and being a leading light in the Footlights Club, still maintained Varsity traditions, including strenuous exercise (he can be seen running and out riding), his typically collegiate rooms at home, and in two of his outfits designs named, Centre Forward and Scrum Half'. Sir Norman Bishop Hartnell (1901 - 1979), was a British couturier and favourite fashion designer of the Queen and Queen Mother. He famously designed Queen Elizabeth II's coronation gown, as well as her dress for her 1947 wedding
