Old Bill was the central cartoon character created by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather in his series of cartoons about trench life published in The Bystander - an old contemptible, curmudgeonly soldier, whose stoicism and off-hand brand of humour won the hearts of the readers both at the front and at home.
