Edward, Prince of Wales, visiting Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Eastern steam-ship, prior to its voyage to lay the transatlantic cable. In the event, the expedition was marred by bad weather and had to be abandoned, but the following year, the cable was successfully laid from Ireland to Newfoundland
