Queen of Spain in her wedding dress. According to Spanish custom, the dress was a gift of her husband and took forty Spanish women 56 days to complete. It was composed of white and silver satin, trimmed with rose-point, with a six inch lace flounce and loops of orange blossom. Formerly Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969), she was the daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg, and spent her childhood in the homes of her grandmother Queen Victoria. She married King Alfonso XIII in May 1906 after converting to Catholicism. The couple narrowly escaped a dramatic assassination attempt on their wedding day when a bomb was thrown at their carriage. Although they had seven children, two of whom were haemophiliac, the marriage was not a success and the couple eventually separated when Alfonso went into exile following the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931. Ena is the grandmother of the current King Juan Carlos of Spain
