Red Cross nurse regulation uniform, WW1
The regulation dress of the Red Cross nurse at the beginning of the First World War. The dress is of dark blue zephyr, the apron of thick white linen with a red cross stitched on to the bib. A white cap and over sleeves to the elbow and a plain, stiff, white collar complete the costume. Note the narrow hemline at the ankle. Though exaggerated in this drawing, within a year, skirt circumferences would increase dramatically to help ease of movement
