Roger Casement, diplomat and Irish independence fighter pictured with L. H. Barnes (tropical agriculturist), W. Fox (rubber expert and botanist), E.S. Bell (merchant), H. L. Gielgud (secretary/manager) and Juan Tizon in the Putumayo district of the Upper Amazon basin in Peru. Casement, Barnes, Fox and Bell were part of a commission investigating abuses carried out by the Anglo-Peruvian Amazon Rubber Company in the area. Their report on the atrocious treatment of the indigenous people by the company caused outrage in Britain, especially when it was revealed the company had a number of British investors
