Rokeby Venus of Velasquez at the National Gallery 1906
Interested visitors at the National Gallery viewing the Toilet of Venus, better known as the Rokeby Venus by Diego Velasquez which had gone on display for the first time after being acquired, at a cost of 40, 000, by the National Arts Collections Fund. Such was the interest in the painting, the gallery registered 5171 visitors on the first Saturday it went on display, 2000 more than an average Saturday. Eight years later, in March 1914, the painting was vandalised when it was slashed by a suffragette in protest at the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst
