Royal Wedding 1947 - bride and bridesmaid dresses

Illustration of the wedding dress worn by Princess Elizabeth for her marriage to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey. The gown, designed by Norman Hartnell was of ivory satin gleaming with hand embroidery representing garlands of York roses entwined with ears of corn. Motifs of applique tulle outlined with pearl and crystal formed a border for the billowing skirt and a train of ethereal tulle, splendidly embroidered, fell from the shoulders under the cloudy folds of the veil. Her shoes were of ivory satin while her attendants wore satin shoes piped wtih silver kid. The bridesmaid dresses, also by Hartnell, were modelled on the Winterhalter portraits hanging in Buckingham Palace and were of diaphanous ivory silk tulle with softly moulded bodices foaming from the waistline into a swirl of tulle scattered with clusters of syringa in applique satin embroidered with a motif which repeated that of the bridal train. A deep fichu of pearl spotted tulle bordered with applique satin syringa swathed the shoulders
