Homeward Bound on Parole: Russian officers on board the S.S. Australien at Port Said. With General and Madame Stoessel on board the S.S. Australien were two Russian admirals and 245 officers with their wives and children. General Anatoly Stessel was commander of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War. He surrendered and returned to St. Petersburg on board the S.S. Australian. He was court-martialled for cowardice on his return and sentenced to death but later pardoned by Nicholas II, continuing his military service during the First World War until his death in 1915.The Russians pictured on deck at Port Said look to be enjoying the homeward journey in considerable comfort
