Rye lifeboatmen, their prefered lifebelt
The Rye Lifeboat disaster. The type of lifebelt preferred by the Rye Lifeboat men. On the 15th November a horrendous disaster occurred causing a crew of seventeen lifeboat men to perish in a raging sea. The crew belonged to Rye Harbour, the whole village went into mourning. The inquest criticised the lifebelts, they were found completely water logged
