Sewers Under London 1867
Cross-section of the Thames Embankment, at that time in construction and completed in 1870. The embankment was built to protect Joseph Bazalgette's low-level sewers and the underground railway, as well as reclaim ground for riverside roads and gardens behind their curved granite-faced river walls
