Sir Denis Anson

Sir Denis Anson, pictured in The Bystander to accompany a report on the public inquest into his death in July 1914. Anson had been part of a group of society people who had taken a midnight trip up the River Thames (a fashionable pastime at the time). Others on board included Raymond Asquith, Iris Tree and Lady Diana Manners. In high spirits, and having imbibed champagne, Sir Denis, who was only 20 years old, insisted on jumping into the river as the boat approached Battersea Bridge. Bandsman William Mitchell jumped in after him in an attempt to save him. Both men were drowned
