Sketch cover, Madame Simone Andre Puget, WW1
Front of The Sketch magazine featuring an artistic portrait of a war widow, Madame Simone Andre Puget, wife of the war poet who fell in a bayonet charge at Neuville St. Vaast. Madame Puget, who had not heard from him, disguised herself in British uniform, cut her hair and went in search of him. She found him, mortally wounded and he died soon afterwards. She toured America lecturing on French authors killed in the war, raising money for war charities. She is pictured here in New York at her booth in Hero-Land, a 16 day fundraising bazaar and exhibition staged in November and December 1917 relating to the war
