Slipper room at Red Cross Society workroom, WW1

Women at work making slippers in the slipper room of the Marylebone branch of the Red Cross Society which was based in a house in Portman Square lent by Mr Lawson Johnson expressly for the purpose. The workrooms, staffed entirely by volunteers, produced garments and surgical requisites for wounded soldiers in hospital and had one room, as shown here, dedicated solely to making slippers. Many different kinds of slippers were made. Some of them were made to open at the back so as not to hurt a badly injured foot, while others were made specially big and deep. The slippers were manufactured from start to finish in this room
