The woman who joined VADs or the ready-trained units, such as the Queen Alexandra Imperial Nursing Corps sent to France, were predominantly from middle- or upper class backgrounds. Most had led sheltered lives in comfortable surroundings and would have been quite unprepared for what they were about to face
