Soldier carrying hot soup to trenches, World War One
The hot soup man. Ensuring the food supply under fire: a British soldier carries a container of hot soup strapped to his back to the trenches in 1917. During the First World War, one of the cook's staff of a battalion fills the metal container from a soup wagon. Helmeted against stray bullets, with bombs attached to his belt so as to take his place in the ranks when his present task is fulfilled, the soldier is only waiting for the container to be full before running the gauntlet to the trenches
