Survivors on the Carpathia, 1912
After the Titanic went down: the rescue of the survivors by the Carpathia which saved 703 lives, including 336 women and 52 children. In the Carpathia's saloon: serving out coffee and stimulants to the rescue women. As soon as the survivors were hoisted on board - some of them wore evening dress and some were in their night clothes - the women and children, most of them wrapped in blankets, were hurried into the saloon, where brandy and coffee were served by the officers and stewards, and everything possible was done for their comfort. "There were husbands without their wives, wives without their husbands, parents without their children, and children without their parents, " said one of the Carpathia's passengers, "but there was no demonstration, and not a sob was heard. They spoke scarcely a word, and seemed to be stunned by the shock of their experience."
