Tate Gallery bombed, 1940
Page from The Tatler reporting on the damage done to the Tate Gallery by German bombs in November 1940. Fortunately, the majority of artworks had been removed to places of greater safety away from London. Main, top picture shows director of the museum, Sir John Rothenstein (eldest son of artist William Rothenstein) surveying the damage, while other photographs show staff in steel helmets and gas masks clearing up fallen glass and debris in the New Duveen Sculpture Gallery
