Tatler cover - Montague Holbein, long distance swimmer

Montague Alfred Holbein (1861 - 1944), prominent British athlete known for his exceptional feats in cycling and swimming, particularly noted for his second place in the inaugural 1891 Bordeaux-Paris race and numerous attempts to swim the English Channel. Pictured on the cover of The Tatler in 1902 after one of his eleven attempts to swim the Channel. As the magazine points out, although he failed to complete the swim, he actually, due to the run of the tide, swam four miles further than Captain Webb. That must have been hugely annoying
