Thomas Lipton (1848 - 1931), Scotsman of Ulster-Scots parentage who was a self-made man, as company founder of Lipton Tea, merchant, philanthropist and yachtsman. Photograph taken when his challenge for the America Cup was being declined by members of the New York Yacht Club, who were disposed to meet the 75ft yacht, the deed of gift placing the length limit at 90ft
