When the Titanic went down: the last of Captain Smith. Among the men who were on board the Titanic when she went down, and who saved themselves by clinging to the upturned collapsible boat, was C. Maynard, a cook, who says that the Captain, fully dressed and wearing his cap, was swimming about for some moments after they found themselves in the water, and was invited by the others on the boat to join them. One man held out his hand, but the Captain eluded his grasp and called out, Look after yourselves, men; don't mind me, and soon afterwards disappeared from view
