Tragedy of the Marathon Race - London Olympics 1908

Running 26.2 miles from grounds of Windsor Castle, through Eton, Harrow and Wembley finished on the track in the White City Stadium in front of the Royal box. Photograph showing every seat in the stadium full amoung the crowd was Queen Alexandra and other members of the royal family, with roars and cheers the exhausted Dorando made his appearance. Pietri collapsed after entering the stadium ahead of the pack during the 1908 London Olympics. He was revived by doctors and some of the officials helped him to his feet and then assisted him to the finish line. John Hayes of the United States was the second finisher. Pietri had been declared the winner, but the Americans lodged a protest that was finally upheld. Dorando was nevertheless presented with a special cup by Queen Alexandra for his pluck
