The trial took place at the Old Bailey, and O'Donnell was hanged in Newgate in December 1884. James Carey was an informer who had given evidence against 5 men for the Pheonix Park murders in Dublin. Carey was being escorted onto the ship Melrose when O'Donnell managed to board the ship and shoot him
