Tsar Nicholas II saluting troops during army manouevres. Russia was traditionally seen as the protector of the Slavs and after Austria attacked Hungary in 1914 mobilised troops. The first line of defence of the Russian army was estimated to number 1.8 million at the time with 5 million fighting men in reserve
